Malaysia is welcoming its first-ever Japanese university branch campus. The University of Tsukuba, located northeast of Tokyo, will open its doors in Kuala Lumpur in September 2024.

The new campus, called the School of Transdisciplinary Science and Design, aims to equip students with the skills to tackle pressing global issues impacting Southeast Asia. With a focus on interdisciplinary courses, the school will offer a unique blend of subjects like statistics, environmental studies, humanities, and social sciences. English and Japanese will be the languages of instruction, making the program accessible to a wider student body.

Admission will be capped at 40 students for the first year, with a dedicated faculty of around 40 professors dispatched from the University of Tsukuba. Graduates will receive a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree upon completing the four-year program.

This initiative stems from a request made by the Malaysian government in 2018. They sought Japan's expertise in establishing an academic institution that would cultivate talent to address global challenges like environment, health, and welfare.
