German defense and automotive giant Rheinmetall is expanding its footprint in Central Europe with a brand-new "hybrid" plant in Szeged, Hungary. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on 26 March 2024, was a star-studded event attended by Hungarian Minister of Defence Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Szeged Mayor Dr. László Botka, and other dignitaries.

This new facility in Szeged, Hungary, is not just another plant for Rheinmetall. It's a pioneering hybrid site, the first of its kind for the company, where civilian and defense technology operations will coexist. Opening its doors in August 2025, the plant will not only bring about 300 highly skilled jobs but also signify a significant investment of €63 million.

What will be produced at the Szeged plant?

The initial phase of the project will see a 15,000-square-meter factory built on an 85,000-square-meter plot. This facility will primarily focus on manufacturing products for Rheinmetall's Automotive business unit. This includes cutting-edge components like nanostructure capacitors and products designed to support the use of hydrogen in mobility and energy generation. Additionally, around 10% of the production area will be dedicated to goods from the military arm of Rheinmetall's Electronic Solutions division.

Building a Strong Presence in Hungary

Christoph Müller, CEO of Rheinmetall's Power Systems division, expressed his enthusiasm about the company's continued expansion in Hungary, one of its home markets. He also extended his gratitude to the Hungarian government for their trust in Rheinmetall as a partner in both the civilian and defense sectors. With this new plant, Rheinmetall is solidifying its presence in Hungary, making Szeged its fourth location in the country, alongside Budapest, Zalaegerszeg, and Várpalota.

This development signifies Rheinmetall's commitment to innovation and its growing role in the Hungarian economy. The "hybrid" nature of the plant also highlights the company's strategic approach to cater to both civilian and defense needs while creating valuable employment opportunities in the region.
