Tesla
Tesla, Inc., headquartered in Austin, Texas, is an American multinational company specializing in automotive and clean energy products. Founded in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning as Tesla Motors, the company pays homage to inventor Nikola Tesla. Elon Musk joined as the largest shareholder in February 2004 and became CEO in 2008.
Tesla began production of its first car, the Roadster, in 2008, followed by several models, including the Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, Tesla Semi, and Cybertruck. The Model 3 holds the record as the best-selling plug-in electric car worldwide, reaching 1 million units sold in June 2021. In 2023, the Model Y became the best-selling vehicle globally.
Tesla has achieved a market capitalization of $1 trillion temporarily in October 2021, making it one of the most valuable companies globally. It leads the battery electric vehicle market and ranks 69th in the Forbes Global 2000. As of March 2024, Tesla is the world's most valuable automaker. Despite its success, Tesla has faced legal challenges, government scrutiny, and criticism regarding whistleblower retaliation, worker rights violations, product defects, and controversial statements made by Elon Musk.
